I am really looking forward for the opportunity to apply for the Post-9/11 GI Bill.
Having served 23 years in the Navy, when I enlisted I fell under the old VEAP
program but was able to take advantage and switch from the VEAP educational
program to the Montgomery GI Bill to help me fund my college education. I am
very much in favor of any and all veterans to take advantage of this educational
assistance especially if they decide not to take advantage of the educational
benefit for themselves but to transfer monies for their dependents as I plan on
requesting any monies left over for my dependent currently attending college.
Since I am retired and not on active duty does this still apply for retirees due to the
wording,
“If you are a member of the Armed Forces on August 1, 2009, the Department of
Defense (DoD) may offer you the opportunity to transfer benefits to your spouse or
dependent children”
Also, I am concerned with the economy in a recession of how long to get
reimbursed the monies paid into the MGIB and since I paid and additional $600 to
take advantage of the MGIB increase, would I be able to be reimbursed that
monies as well. The new educational program doesn’t require any veteran to pay
into the new Post-9/11 educational program so is there a limit of the applicants
due to government spending since the other educational programs were for those
who paid into the benefit.
