Details Information

Abstract: This notice solicits comments on a proposal to create a new safety standard specifying requirements for buses equipped with lift systems. The standard would specify minimum platform dimensions. To protect persons riding on the platform while it is in motion, the standard would set limits on the size of protrusions in the platform surface and gaps between the platform and either the bus floor or the ground. In addition, the standard would require platforms to have wheelchair retaining barriers of devices, handrails, and warning signals. Performance tests are proposed for the evaluation of lift strength, the ability of the lift to retain a wheelchair on its platform, and the slip resistance of the platform.A set of operational and interlock requirements are included to prevent accidental movement of the lifr when someone is aboard. The standard is intended to prevent injuries and fatalities during lift operation.
