Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council; Public Meeting

AGENCY: National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), National Oceanic and 
Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Commerce.

ACTION: Notice of public meeting.

SUMMARY: The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council (Council) will 
convene a public meeting of its Habitat Protection Committee 
(Committee).

DATES: This meeting will be held beginning at 10:00 a.m. on January 28, 
1997, and ending at 3:00 p.m. on January 30, 1997.

SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION: The purpose of the meeting will be to review 
NMFS' guidelines regarding essential fish habitat (EFH). These 
guidelines are mandated by the recent passage of amendments to the 
Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act.
    The Committee intends to hold a round-table discussion and review 
what the Council's role should be with regard to the development and 
implementation of EFH guidelines. The Committee, on behalf of the 
Council, will develop comments and recommendations for consideration by 
NMFS.
