According to the proposed amendment, the current 2008 Farm Bill will be amended in a way to diminish cost to the federal government. As stated, there will always be need to sell the recovered access supply of sugar. In order to operate in accordance with it’s stated goals, no cost to the taxpayer, other avenues of disposal must be targeted. If the agency were to find that the conversion of government owned sugar were to be very profitable to the bioenergy industry, there could be huge gains in multiple areas. One would be in an attempt to reduce the dependency on fossil fuels from foreign nations. Another would be in a way to restore the agency to the state of operating at a low cost to the taxpayer and finally it would bolster the price of domestic sugar.
In man ways this country is tied to fossil fuels in ways that cannot be broken unless a cheap viable alternative is discovered. I the scientific community is able to convert sugars into energy in a cheap fashion our dependency on foreign fossil fuels may lessen. With the President recently saying that he is putting a hold on the Keystone pipeline project, there will continue to be a need to lessen the burden on the individual. While the use of sugars or other forms of bioenergy may be years away, this may be a start. Also, if we are able to limit the need to import foreign oils, national defense would be bolstered as we will not have to deal with nation’s that may harbor those will ill intentions for the United States.
If the goals of this amendment are to met at half of their intentions, I find that this will be a great move for the USDA and the CCC. I am for any way that will lower the cost of operations to the taxpayer as well as possibly diminishing our nation’s dependence on fossil fuel, is a step in the right direction.
