I became aware of the controversy surrounding MSMA when a contractor was hired by our county manager to spray the right-of-ways on May 18, 2012. The contractor used a product called Target 6, in which the active ingredient is MSMA. I am aware that it is still legal to use MSMA in roadside applications. However, I am concerned that even if the chemical is allowed to continue to be used by commercial applicators, there is still significant potential for mis-use, as was the situation in my community. The chemical was applied in such a concentration that it burned just about everything it touched. It was also broadcast along rural residential roadsides without regard to nearby surface water sources, private home vegetable gardens, and in areas clearly marked as "Drinking Water Protection Areas."
