Overall, the standards for produce is highly anticipated as it will make us consumers feel a lot safer when purchasing these products at the market. Conversely, the issue stands at the compliance dates for small and very small businesses. It is understandable that small businesses are more likely to induce a large monetary hit with the additional regulations, but what does this mean for the consumers who may purchase their products within the five to six year grace period given to comply with requirements? Perhaps during this time where there are no standards required to be met under official inspection, an alternative may be considered. For instance, yearly follow-ups with the FDA to track progress on updating regulations at the facilities to ensure that standards are still being accomplished at least to a minimum to help ease consumers on the safety of their produce. After all, the main concept is to protect consumer health and safety from potential foodborne illnesses.
