Anecdotal comment only, no scientific data to back it up. I live near a fly way for
the hawks, and have for the past thirty years, watching them fly from the uplands
to the lowlands in the morning and back again in the evening( in Hawaiian, from
mauka to makai). The number of sightings has declined for the past decade,
prompting my wife and I to wonder how the overall population was doing. I was
surprised to read about the delisting, as I would have thought the opposite was
needed, more protection not less, especially of habitat. We have also noticed that
the Hawaiian owl no longer makes an appearance on our property, and they used
to be a regular visitor.Do not know if the two are connected or not, but since both
need trees to nest, both hunt, and are susceptible to introduced diseases, it is
possible. Please reconsider and do not delist. If an error is to occur, err
conservatively.
