In regards to the proposal to license saltwater fishing in Massachusetts and
surrounding states.I have been saltwater fishing for about 10 years now, and half
of the enjoyment of it comes from the pure freedom. All one needs is a pole,
beach and some bait. I have always been turned off to freshwater fishing because i
like catching and eating striper as well as avoiding the hassle of obtaining and
paying for a license. I personally have always followed the current regulations for
minimum size of "keeper" fish and the amount of fish that one may keep. I think
these regulations are fine, they keep people from removing young fish that will
grow big someday or removing too many from a school, etc. As it is, its hard for
one man to make these rules an issue because its already hard to catch even one
fish, let alone a ten "keepers." Which is why i find this rule proposal completely
frivolous. I do support the environmental concern of the NOAA, which should be
funded somehow, but i do not support giving states an exemption for doing so.
This sort of revenue for the state will be pressed into some slush fund or some
other program. If a rule is passed, the NOAA must asert that the revenue from this
measure is going solely towards data collection (apparently a fish census?) or to
state environmental funding or research, not to Big Dig loan pay-offs, etc.
