Gillnets produce an average 14.4 lb dw blacknose shark which is a sexually mature shark not a juvenal shark ,and the BiOp stated shark gillnets do not catch near the amount of protected species that bottom long lines catch. The few fishermen left in the shark gillnet industry are not newcomers but are seasoned fishermen with over 20 years of experience. The federal observer data has shown that 97.3 percent of the catch consist of sharks and 98.1 of the sharks caught were the targeted species. With fishing gear this efficient I cannot fathom how HMS could even consider banning this gear.
