I am a diver and can vouch for the fact that the Amberjack population is healthy because I see personally witness that fact. I also dispute that 2010 effort caused the recreational sector to go over their quota. The data is flawed and I dispute those numbers.
If you feel its adventagous to close Amberjack, the closure should occur during their spawning season in February and March top protect the new stock.
The closure in the middle of the summer needlessly closes the season and effects all fishermen by elimination an entire species. The rules on AJ are already so strict, only one fish can be harvested per person.
With gas prices going up, I find it hard to believe that one fish per person is causing over fishing. I think we can all agree that the data is flawed when determining the amount of fish being landed by the recreational sector.
The population is healthy and one fish per person by a recreational fisherman that only fishes twich per month on a saturday cannot possibly be enough to exceed our qouta. The data incorrectly assumes many fishermen are fishing multiple times per year. The fact is that we all have jobs and can only fish on occasional weekends. The date assumes we make multiple trips weekls with limits caught each time.
Please dont close Amberjack during the summer. Effort is already down because of gas prices and one fish per person is not excessive. Its a shame that the date thinks we are landing several AJ's per month which is untrue.
