I am uncomfortable with this policy. A reasonable level of oversight is
necessary, but I believe that holding information about border crossings for
fifteen years-- for American citizens-- goes beyond reasonable and begins to
treat citizens like criminals. I think we have put up with a great deal of
invasions and suspicions over the years and I think the American people deserve
some trust-- or at least salutary neglect-- from their government.
Beyond my concern for my basic right to anonymity, I am concerned with the
measures of this plan related to database access on the state level. Have we
not learned from our many national mistakes with hacking into the government's
system?-- what huberous to think this database system will be infallible,
inaccessible? what terrible myopia to assume that this time, these records won't
be stolen.
I wouldn't trust the government to do alot of things-- and reasonably so, that's
why we've set up our lovely checks and balances-- and one of the things I do not
trust the government to do is keep my private information private or secure.
Please do not put this program into effect-- G-d knows I won't be voting
Republican this year.
