I was a flight attendant and was only able to perform in this career for a very short time, due to contaminated cabin air. I am still struggeling with ill health and am now no longer able to fly on commercial airplanes at all. The problem of contaminated bleed air has been known by authorities, manufacturers and airlines for decades, but there´s been a reluctance to find a solution, mainly because of the costs and admitting to the fumes not only being a nuisance, but a health threat.
How many accidents go down to contaminated cabin air and the pilots not being able to control the plane anymore due to bad health symptoms from the fumes, is uncounted. But from my experience and those of many many other aircrew members, I would say there would be a lot.
Unfiltered and unmonitored cabin air is a threat to flight safety and it is about time to change this. As long as there is no monitoring, how can anyone say there is no problem with oil, hydraulic fluids and anti-ice-fluids coming in through the air supply? Many sick crews and passengers tell another story.
For the safety of flights, crews and passengers, the installation of bleed air monitoring equipment and fitting bleed air filters is a necessity, not an option.
Best regards
