Seems like this is actually a step backwatrds from the Oct. 1, 2010 Interpretation. Under 2010 Interpretation it read: "Site-specific conditions may lead agencies to determine that it is impossible or impractical to comply with a Standard and that they must deviate from the requirement of the particular Standard at that location OR OTHERS WITH SAME CONDITION (caps my emphasis)." By allowing agencies to decide that "Preferential Lane Ends 1/2 Mile" is impractial for termination of bicycle lanes, it should not be necessary to review every individual site. Maybe someday MUTCD will be modified on this item, but in the interim shouldn't agencies be allowed to make blanket decision to not use that particular sign, even though it is a Standard?
